The story of stone soup is as old as time. The story follows a traveller who comes across a mountain village in the dead of winter…supplies are low and families are struggling to get through the remaining days of cold. Unsurprisingly even the most generous people are not prepared to share their food during this time of scarcity. The traveler sits down by the fire with a large cauldron filled with water. She tells the villagers to join her in a feast of delicious stone soup as she adds hot stones to the water, all she needs is a bit of garnish, she says. The villagers, so excited to be eating stone soup each bring a little bit of garnish, a carrot here and there, some mushrooms, a potato…as the stones boil the water, each adds a little bit of what they have. Each brings their bowls and spoons to the growing cauldron of goods, excited to partake. By the end of the night, the cauldron is growing, simmering with delicious, nourishing soup which feeds the village for days.
